A DISH SERVED COLD
Every morning at the height of sunrise breakfast was underway inside the Monzetti family kitchen. The children, along with the Nanny congregated on high back stools around the center counter while the female android cook served their meal fresh from the stove. Sunlight beamed through the windows, a light frost on the edges of the panes, brightening the room enough to where the overhead lights didnât need to be on. The white fixtures and appliances seemed to almost glow.
At the center of attention was the patriarch of the house. Don Monzetti was a big man at nearly seven feet tall and all brawn. Surrounded by his children and faithful employees, the man was content.
The middle child sat next to the Nanny, his shoulder length dark hair barely tamed. His blue eyes, close to violet, were wide open in ecstasy as he savored each bite of his food. At twelve years old, he was third in line for succession in the family business and favored his father in looks more so than his siblings. The youngest sat on the end of the counter along with the oldest, both having lighter colored hair like their deceased mother.
Some of his hitmen and lieutenantsâ children had crammed themselves between them to join in on the laughter and small talk. The cook made up more food, filling up plates and setting them on the counter for easy reach. A typical day in life.
Glass breaking, followed by loud footsteps and yelling made them all stop and look towards the door. The two body guards keeping sentry drew their weapons. Casually dressed in suits, sans ties, with the jackets open, they glanced back at their boss and nodded.
âOkay, letâs get going,â Don Monzetti said. âWe need to get to the bunker.â He turned to his employeesâ children. âYou know what to do.â
They all nodded and scrambled around the counter as laser fire showered the kitchen. The cook went down, having been shot in the head multiple times. The Nanny was hit in the shoulder and used her body to push the middle child onto the floor.
âSplit up!â Don Monzetti ordered.
He grabbed his youngest and headed out the inner doors behind the kitchen that led into the main part of the house. The employeesâ children did as instructed. Three of them grabbed the middle son while the other four ushered out the oldest. The Nanny took up the rear, clutching her shoulder as she grabbed her revolver from the side table near the door.
She eyed the charging cartridge to make sure the gauge showed blue indicating it was still somewhat full. As the side door closed, she caught a glimpse of the enemy running towards the kitchen still firing.
â¢
Wearing grey tailored suits and fedoras tilted down to hide their eyes, the enemy swarmed every nook of the house, killing without prejudice. Their boss was the last to come into the home, flanked by four of his lieutenants. His full length, double breasted coat was draped over his shoulders like a cape.
